Not All Butane Is the Same

Good butane burns clean, it won't clog the jets in your torch lighter, and it won't interfere with the taste of your cigar. Common brands of butane include Xikar, Colibri, Lotus, and ST Dupont. The best butane for a cigar torch is at least triple-refined.

Butane burns cleaner than propane as it will only produce carbon dioxide when lit. In general, sealed, butane canisters do not go bad; in fact, the consensus is that they will last for up to ten years or sometimes even more. Opened butane canisters that sit unused will still be flammable and work fine in your camping stove, but the quality of the gas may deteriorate over time.

They are available in many different brands. But because they are manufactured to a standard design, any brand will fit any brand of table-top stove. They are different to standard screw thread iso-butane canisters (pictured right) which are commonly used for camping and backpacking.

As with normal butane (n-butane), isobutane (i-butane) is a flammable hydrocarbon gas that is liquefied through pressurisation.
