Man, 58, dies in hospital weeks after Mississauga hit-and-run (2024)

A 58-year-old man has died in hospital following a hit-and-run in Mississauga last month.

Peel Regional Police held a press briefing near the site of the fail-to-remain incident Thursday afternoon. A family member was also in attendance holding a photo of the victim.

Police say the victim, identified only as Jim, was crossing Dundas St. W., east of The Credit Woodlands, on Aug. 18 at approximately 11 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle in the westbound lanes.

The vehicle stopped for a moment, then fled the scene.

Police say the victim suffered life-threatening injuries and died Sept. 4.

Investigators have identified a dark-coloured 2014-2016 four-door Toyota Corolla that will have damage to its windshield, driver-side front fender and driver-side front wheel well cover over the tire.

Police pleaded for any witnesses or people with video footage to come forward, and they also asked the driver to turn themself in.

“We would encourage you to consult with a lawyer and turn yourselves in to police to bring closure to this case, and closure to Bill and his family, which they rightfully deserve,” Det.-Const. Taylor Halfyard said.

“Our condolences go out to Jim’s family, Bill White, who is brave enough to be here with us today, and all the rest of his family who has been affected by this incident.”

Family member Bill White said Jim was diabetic, had no family and was on long-term disability.

“He wasn’t able to work,” White said. “He had to give up his car because he had neuropathy (weakness, numbness and pain) in his feet. So he was not doing well financially, but he was getting along.”

White said the victim knew a young lady who he considered his daughter after renting part of her mother’s basem*nt for 14 years. He had known the woman, who is now a 35-year-old lawyer in England, since she was seven.

“This has really bothered her a lot, of course,” White said.

Since Jim’s death, the woman flew to Canada and stayed for two weeks to help White deal with trying to get things settled.

“They were very, very close,” White said.
